Is it possible to print a list of folders contained on a disk as a hard copy table of contents?

With all of the features built into Windows, one of them is not the ability to quickly print a list of folders that reside on your hard drive, floppy drive or CD.

The reasons for wanting such a feature range from simple record keeping to listing all MP3 music files on a disk to the ability to create instructional documents for computer training.

Anyone that has plunged into the world of digital music is likely to have thousands of songs in dozens of folders and no easy way to create a hard copy of their song collection.

There are a handful of ‘shareware’ (try it before you buy it) programs available that give you the ability to create a printed or electronic table of contents

One of the more full featured programs is called ‘FolderPrint Plus’ from Starglider Systems.

Not only can it help you with basic folder printing needs, it can provide much more detail on compressed ‘ZIP’ files (including what is in them) and the ‘ID3 tag’ information on MP3 files (which contains artist, album, genre, bitrate, length of the track, etc.) as well.

You can tell FolderPrint to scan an entire hard drive, floppy drive, CD, smartmedia or any media type that appears in ‘My Computer’ or just a single folder and its contents You can scan and print folders only, files only or both files and folders in a single report.

It also has a feature to graphically show you the percentage of space a particular folder is taking as well as the size of each directory This is helpful when you are trying to figure out where all the free space on your hard drive has gone!

You can preview any report before you print it or export it to a number of different file types including ASCII, Light ASCII, HTML, CSV (Comma Separated Values), JPG or PNG (Both graphical outputs) The report format has a lot of flexibility including headers, margins, background colors and titles.

It has extensive filtering capability to allow you to only see files or folders from a certain date or date range as well as files or folders of or over a certain size.

You can limit the number of sub-folders that you want it to scan and once the information has been generated, sort by any of the category columns displayed.

For the UberGeek, you can print file versions of both EXE and DLL files, which is very helpful for anyone that is writing or troubleshooting an application.

You can rename multiple files and even print a list of your ‘Favorites’ with the URL extract option.

A 30-day trial version of FolderPrint can be downloaded from their web site (www.stgsys.com/fpp.asp) and if you find it useful, it’s only $21.95 to keep!
